    North Carolina's chief justice has assigned three judges to hear the innocence case of a 70-year-old man who's behind bars for the murders of a mother and daughter almost 40 years ago. Chief Justice Mark Martin on Tuesday assigned judges to hear the case of Joseph Sledge, who was convicted in August 1978 of the murders of Josephine and Aileen Davis of Elizabethtown.

    After three days of testimony earlier this month, the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission unanimously voted to send the case of Joseph Sledge for judicial review, finding that sufficient evidence exists to show Sledge did not kill Josephine Davis, 74, and her daughter Ailene Davis, 53, in their Elizabethtown home in September 1976. At the time of the crimes, Sledge had been serving a four-year sentence at a prison work farm for larceny when he escaped a day before the slayings.
