He arrived in 1900, working with his brother Abdoo for four years before founding his own grocery and clothing store at 211 State St. Abdoo operated a dry goods store across the railroad tracks from his brother, at 221 State St. Both brothers remained a vital part of the business district until their deaths - Scander on May 15, 1949, and Abdoo on April 16, 1943.
