Verso officials, who stunned the community recently with the closure announcement, claim the law requiring large corporations to provide timely severance does not apply to them.

    Union officials Monday sued the owner of the Bucksport paper mill and the salvage firm buying the now idled facility in an effort to block the sale. Verso Paper announced on Dec. 8 that the company had reached an agreement to sell its Bucksport mill and related power generation assets to a subsidiary of the Montreal-based American Iron and Metal in January for about $60 million, according to a previously published report.
