    A physical education teacher on a mission was the catalyst behind the birth of the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District 60 years ago on March 4. Elsie Stuhr kicked off the idea in 1953 with a letter to "Fellow Parkless Suburbanites," according to a booklet written by Stuhr that chronicles the first 40 years of the park district. The letter continues, "Have you thought of the possibilities of community planning for recreational development within the boundaries of the Beaverton Union High School District?" Two years later, THPRD opened its first facility; the Beaverton Swim Center near Beaverton High School , swimmers still use it today.
