Thursday Jan 15 | Orange Juice

Hark! how the brisk January days are enlivened by exaltation of birdsong. And what chismes are these pajaritos warbling this month? They sing of the Tuesday January 27 race to take dirty Janet Nguyen's place on the Board of Supervisors - only twelve days away now! - and they chatter, they chirp, and they ululate.

Wednesday Jan 14 | Orange Juice

It was a friendly competition between Garden Grove's Bao Nguyen and Westminster School Board Trustee Jamison Power to see whose school district could get the first Vietnamese-English dual immersion program in California, and it looks like Jamison has won the race! Beginning this Fall, and beginning in only one kindergarten class but growing from there in the future, DeMille Elementary School will teach all subjects in both English and Vietnamese - the first in this state, although Viet-English dual immersion classes are already in place in Oregon, Texas and Washington.

    Jun 7, 2012 | Orange Juice

I wish to propose a new feature for Orange Juice blog, called, "Worst government website of 2015." Then I wish to immediately nominate a website for the award, and I warn you, there will be a great effort taken to knock this one from the pedestal before the end of the year.

Carve into 4A1 2 equal population-sized pieces, placing the half piece in the upper right to be joined to easternmost Anaheim Hills. Note: I published the piece below on Jan. 8, 2014 - so, with Distrincting back in the news, this first anniversary is a pretty good day to republish it, right? Its maps were predicated on the idea of four districts, but it gives a good head start on understanding how six districts might work.

  6. In the Wide Open and Desolate ARTIC, Can Orange County Find Overnight Haven for the Homeless?Read the original story w/Photo

Wednesday Dec 31 | Orange Juice

Most of Orange Juice Blog's local readers, I'm going to guess, have homes - so the worst thing that was likely to have happened to them during last night's storm and cold snap would have been if their power went out. And then, so long as they had walls and windows and a roof, they would still be in better shape than this county's unsheltered homeless.

    Dec 10, 2014 | Orange Juice

Five years to the hour after the police shooting death of 25-year-old Caesar Cruz in the Walmart parking lot in Anaheim Plaza, Cruz's mother Theresa Smith is calling for a memorial march to take place tomorrow from that parking lot to the Anaheim Police Department Headquarters on Harbor between West Broadway and West Santa Ana, where it will be followed by a vigil. Given my occasionally contentious relationship with OC Weekly writer Gabriel San Roman, when I tell you to go read his piece on the subject right now you should understand that it's quite worth your time.

Tomorrow morning should be a real good show, at a nearly-ungodly 8AM Wednesday meeting of the Orange County Water District , at 18700 Ward Street, Fountain Valley, just south of Ellis . This is when, as the third part of the 3-part propaganda blitz Poseidon Inc. has been engaged in since faceplanting a year ago at the Coastal Commission , the Poseidon-beholden OCWD officially unveils its new "financial analysis" by Clean Energy Capital on the affordability and utter necessity and wonder of the Connecticut firm's proposed billion-dollar Huntington Beach desalination plant.

  11. Reader Contest: "Excellence in Service"Read the original story w/Photo

    Dec 8, 2014 | Orange Juice

"I admit that this isn't exactly the best seat," said Mayor Pulido, "but the service here is absolutely terrific!" The Democratic Foundation of Orange County , among whose members I count some friends, is the private organization set up for "Business Democrats" and other large donors to sponsor speakers in more intimate settings than might otherwise be available and to endorse Democratic candidates. This year, while the Democratic Party of Orange County membership itself heavily favored Roman Reyna for Santa Ana Mayor, although not enough so to gain the supermajority needed for an endorsement, the DFOC did endorse in that race.

  12. Is Pettibone's Blogger Defamation article a shot across the bow at Chmielewski and Cunningham?Read the original story w/Photo

    Dec 7, 2014 | Orange Juice

Who knew? Doug Pettibone , business attorney, much-slandered former Anaheim council candidate and friend of Tom Tait, has a very entertaining and informative law blog , which he runs with his wife and colleague Claire. And the topic of one of their posts this month, written by Claire, was provocative, given Doug's recent experience suffering what certainly seemed to many of us to be libel at the hands of this county's two sleaziest bloggers: The Liberal OC's Dan Chmielewksi and the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce's Matt Cunningham .

This was going to be your Weekend Open Thread, but I'll come up with a new one, because this can stand by itself. Orange Juice Blog promised you, in a moment of weakness and perhaps desperation, that we would follow up after the election with news of which jurisdiction within the County had the highest proportion of its voters supporting Nader Shahatit - and then we would reward the winner by writing a story about its role in the election or a future one.

  15. Steve Sheldon's Unethical Culture Challenged by Legal ComplaintRead the original story w/Photo

    Dec 1, 2014 | Orange Juice

OC Water District Director Steve Sheldon scurries off when caught by the author hobnobbing with Poseidon brass after a meeting on their proposed HB plant: The Fair Political Practices Commission has been asked to investigate a business relationship held by Orange County Water District board member Stephen Sheldon to determine if it precludes him from deliberating on a proposed ocean desalination plant. The complaint alleges that Sheldon [right] appears to be using his business relationship with consultant Roger Faubel , owner of Faubel Public Affairs , to shield his financial links to Poseidon Resources , the company that wants to build a $1 billion ocean desalination plant in Huntington Beach.

  18. Follow the Dark Money, Part 2: Disney's Return on Campaign...Read the original story w/Photo

    Nov 25, 2014 | Orange Juice

The big money that the special interests recently spent in Anaheim campaigns was a drop in the bucket in comparison to what they can gain from laundering funds of Curt Pringle's various political and quasi-business groups. At the head of that list, of course, is Disney, who blew through roughly $700k, But along the way we pick up the interests of Kris Murray's career trajectory, Curt Pringle's ability to fund that retirement island, Angels baseball's man-in-the-middle position as a very expensive pass-through for the world's most important parking garage, and in the end a very likely tale of honest services frauda at the very least.

    Nov 23, 2014 | Orange Juice

I would love to nominate Art Marroquin for this week's Skadooshy Award for nailing the Front Page article in today's Register , entitled "Icon or Eyesore?" It is a total send up of the $182MM ARTIC, complete with pics, covering how incredibly ugly the damn thing is when lit at night. But the Register makes it hard to do that onlinea since you cannot actually SEE the article on their website unless you go looking for it, and then I was only able to see the "Text Only" version, which is completely sanitized of some controversial quotes included in the paper version, and runs sans some pretty good photography.

Where did we leave off with Measure J, which needs 55% support - not rounded off, but meaning more than 54.9999999999% - to pass? Let's see: before those last 50 paper ballots, the score was this: Add 18 yes votes and 11 no votes - 62.0689655172%, if anyone's wondering - and we get this distribution of our 150,171 votes: But that , of course, does not settle the issue. The issue will be settled in La Harbra Heights And that means that we're waiting on the final returns from Los Angeles.
