Miller finishes 2nd at World Cup slalom opener

Bode Miller lost to Jean-Baptiste Grange by 0.79 seconds Sunday in the World Cup slalom opener.

The Frenchman, who led Ted Ligety of the United States by 0.25 and Miller by 0.26 after the first run, had a two-run total of 1:44.49 down Levi's Black Course north of the Arctic Circle.

It was Grange's fourth career slalom victory after winning three races last season.

Ligety made a big mistake about halfway down the mountain and wound up 22nd in 1:50.78.

Benjamin Raich, a gate specialist from Austria who was runner-up behind Miller in the overall standings last year, missed a gate early in the second run and was disqualified. Raich was fourth after the opening run.

American Vonn wins World Cup slalom opener

American Lindsey Vonn picked up where she left off last season, winning the World Cup slalom opener on Saturday.

Vonn, who won her first overall World Cup title last season, overcame a big mistake late in the second run for a total time of 1:47.98 on Levi's Black Course.

'I was going a little bit too straight,' Vonn said. 'The course was getting a bit tighter and I was just kind of sitting back a little bit and pretty much stopped. I realized my mistake and just thought I had to give everything I had. I think I was really fast in the bottom.'
