LI wine growers agree: 2008's weather was a challenge

Kenneth Vaglio took no chances. After a growing season plagued by frost, hail, heavy rains and wide temperature swings, the general manager of Vineyard 48 in Cutchogue decided this month to begin harvesting ...

I go out to the vineyards several times a year and have enjoyed supporting L.I. wines. I do see a problem on the horizon though.

The international wine scene is filled with good reasonably priced wines. I've paid more for L.I. wines realizing that they are at a disadvantage due to land costs etc...
A trend is developing where some of the vineyards have raised prices on their ribbon winning bottles to $40-$50 or more. They're not competative with the world market at all.

Sorry to say it but our "wine region" is picturesque and good for tourism but the wine is so-so at best. Way overpriced.

Some of the vineyards are owned for tax write-offs and vanity bragging rights in the Hamptons.

Blind taste testing produces some amazing results. The reporters at the New York Times had arguments about which beer is best. They all were "experts". Blind test showed that they chose Rheingold.

I think in the past 5 years the overall quality of
East End wines have improved immensely; In some cases the quality has caught up with the price, yes as a group they are overpriced but in a number of cases the price/quality ratio is good.

This is why the French have a vintage year control board. Not every year is a vintage year, and the wine during non vintage years vary from good, so-so, to awful.

Sorry, not into those vineyards on the North Fork. They take up way too much land, hindering commercial development and new residential construction. All this for mediocre, over-priced wine and wineries that supply few jobs for the immense resources they soak up, seasonal jobs to migrant workers aside.

LI Louie, maybe that is what the residents of this lovely area want, Minimal commercial development and a quiet pace of life. Possibly you should consider staying where you are, and don't try to impose your will upon others.

You don't think LI is crowded enough already? Dude, there's plenty of land in other places to build....

Pindar is awful. Get out and try some real hand crafted wines here on Long Island. The LI Louie guy is a joke, he pops up randomly and plays on Nassau County stereotypes.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of Pindar either. I usually hit Macari to buy wines out east...

It's wine......BIG DEAL!

Why won't Newsday allow readers to post comments about the real news stories? It's their headlines for crying out loud! Today's headlines alone are proof positive that we need to fence in Hempstead and put a 50 foot moat around the electrified fence. Or we could go the way of the Simpsons Movie and simply dome Hempstead. Let's keep the danger in, and in a few years , when there's no longer a human population there, we can build something nice.
