Thanks to the Met Ball and the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Punk: Chaos to Couture" exhibition, punk is officially back on the fashion radar.

Forty years ago, Sylvain Sylvain helped change the American musical landscape forever as co-founder of the legendary proto-punk outfit the New York Dolls, which released its self-titled debut in 1973.

The story goes that Malcolm McLaren plucked John Lydon off the street to audition for his new band after seeing him strut past in a Pink Floyd t-shirt , defaced with a scrawling "I hate". It was 1975 and that band later became the Sex Pistols.

Scritti Politti is a British band, formed in Leeds, in 1977 by Green Gartside. Initially a punk band, the group's sound became more "mainstream" in the 1980's. In the mid-1970's, Green Gartside was studying fine art at Leeds College of Art and Design.

"Punk" is a word that has lots of fun uses. On Monday night at the Met Ball , it defined the dress code and the museum exhibit.

By giving the title " Chaos to Couture " to the punk fashion exhibition that opened yesterday, the curators of the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute have announced a particular perspective and methodology.

First up are the , who opened the Sex Pistols' infamous last show in San Francisco and helped spark the Bay Area's great punk scene.
