It all went down Monday night in, where else, Athens, GA. The occasion was a show by The Minus 5 , the band headed by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and former Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey, at Athens' venerable 40 Watt Club .

In the 1960s, traveling cavalcades of bands used to barnstorm across the country, introducing acts in rapid-fire succession.

Scott McCaughey is a little-known music veteran who has multiple careers. His work hits most people's ears by virtue of his many years as a sideman with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members REM.

Last we checked, the sleepy summer boating resort town of Lake Arrowhead wasn't really known for being a rock music mecca of the Inland Empire.

Minus 5a s latest album is a pleasant mix of country, folk and rock, bringing together these genres with obvious skill and flair.

Scott McCaughey has been a busy boy. Not only is he releasing an album with his main band Young Fresh Fellows on July 7th, but the same day he will be releasing the new album from his side project The Minus 5. The new Minus 5 album, Killingsworth , sees McCaughey reunited with project mainstays Peter Buck and John Moen .

The eighth record from Scott McCaughey's group The Minus 5 starts off on a relatively low-key note with 'Dark Hand Of Contagion,' an acoustic guitar track highlighted by some haunting steel guitar.

There are people who like to dick around with instruments. There are people who like being on stage.

The lineup will consist of Steve Wynn , R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows and Linda Pitmon , with the tour kicking off Aug.

Easily the most recognizable entry on the overworked and underplayed McCaughey's resume is R.E.M., which has employed the Seattle-based rocker's varied instrumental talents on its albums on and off since 1994.

R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and his side band, the Minus 5, will play the Union County MusicFest on September 12.

The Minus 5 features Peter Buck from R.E.M. on guitar. Without him, you probably would never be reading this review, which is too bad because The Minus 5's music is light and lively, reveling in pure pop goodness and not taking itself too seriously in the process.

SCOTT MCCAUGHEY IS a much less well-known name than it deserves to be. The Seattle-based guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist is the mastermind behind '80s college-radio favorites the Young Fresh Fellows and '90s indie rockers The Minus 5 , as well as a collaborator with R.E.M. on some of its later albums.

Portland rockers Point Juncture, WA , played a set of noisy indie tunes at SakeOne on Saturday as part of the sakery's summer concert series.
