Gaston Played Important Role in Legendary Briarhoppers' Saga: String band's story told

“I think I'm about through with music”

IN MY OPINION

At last, there's a book with the whole story.

The story of the Briarhoppers. Thomas and Lucy Warlick of Clover have done an exhaustive job documenting this legendary Carolinas string group that formed in 1934.

'The WBT Briarhoppers: Eight Decades of a Bluegrass Band Made for Radio' is required reading for anyone interested in Southern music and textile culture. And Gaston County played an important role in the Briarhoppers' saga.

My old friends Roy 'Whitey' Grant and Arval Hogan met while working in Gastonia's Firestone Mill in the 1930s. They started making music together locally and joined the cast of the Briarhoppers radio show on WBT in 1941. Read more

“It's nice because it will be cool for everybody to get to see what Preston and I are doing down at school and there's not a lot of bluegrass around here so it will be awesome for everybody to be able to hear it.”

It's music not heard very often in North Dakota... It's more popular in the south... But two young North Dakotans have a love for it and are trying to boost it's popularity. via KXMB-TV Bismarck
