Review: William Tell, Rossini, Wales National Opera

Conductor Carlo Rizzi took a firm grip of Rossini's William Tell and never once took his eye off the target, hitting the musical bull's-eye in a musically ravishing evening. At the curtain call he quite rightly brought chorus master Alexander Martin to the front as the fellow architect of this powerhouse performance But sadly, again, the musicians and excellent cast were let down by a production as cuckoo as it was cheesy, scaling the heights of director excess, driving more holes through the opera than a ripe Emmental.

Ensemble. Avant-garde and Fun

Often when the avant-garde takes on an early nineteenth century opera , the outcome is quite dreary, if not altogether boring. Especially if the opera is one of the four best and most amusing music comedies of the century : Rossini 's Il Barbiere di Siviglia , Mozart 's Le Nozze di Figaro , Wagner 's Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg and Verdi 's Falstaff .
