Dynamic vocalist Dwight Trible will lead the next Pierce Street Jazz concert this week, putting on display his musicianship and improvisational skill.

After a recent performance of Before the Blues , a new ballet by the Lines Ballet Company, someone from the audience asked choreographer Alonzo King where he got the idea to pair a Pharoah Sanders composition with music by the baroque composer Arcangelo Corelli.

Despite the fact that avant-garde jazz has often met with the criticism that its tonalities and rhythms put it far outside the jazz tradition, it is quite true that many of the forerunners of free jazz found their voice in blues and R&B outfits.

Pharoah Sanders' Elevation was recorded in 1973, three years after Sanders' appearance on Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda , and shares much of the ambiance and sonic palette of that classic album.
