In honor of her birthday , TCM is running a number of Lillian Gish's movies today.

There were nearly no cars, trucks or planes. The aptly named Cora Young and her mother had to take a train to her dentist appointments in her home state of Vermont because the office was too far away for a horse-and-buggy ride.

The details: In 1926, King Vidor was the best young director in Hollywood. Within one year, he had made The Big Parade, the landmark epic about World War I and the most successful silent film of all time, not to mention La Boheme, a beautifully shot adaptation with Lillian Gish and John Gilbert.

Great women in silent cinema — including Greta Garbo and Lillian Gish — are showcased in the Paramount Theatre's Silent Movie Mondays series, beginning June 8. Films on the lineup include: "Flesh and the Devil," June 8; "Romola," June 15; "The Godless Girl," June 22; "Seventh Heaven," June 29.
