Lucky enough to call USA home

Isn't it great how this time of the year, you really start to appreciate all the things that make you an American? Of course, I am always proud to be an American but there is something about summer around here that makes me want to sing along loudly with Lee Greenwood as he blasts out how proud he is to be an American - among complete strangers. Maybe this overwhelming feeling has something to do with all the aspects of summer that just feel a little more 'American' than normal. It could be the prospect of bright, sparkly showers of color falling from the sky; the guarantee that a walk around the neighborhood will engulf you in the aroma of an outdoor grill with a high probability of brats, burgers and hot dogs frying on the grates; the crack of the bat at a baseball game; stopping for ice cream after dinner. All of this makes you smile at the fact that you get to call this place home. Yes, I used those particular words 'get to' on purpose because it implies that it is a privilege to live in America. I know that being a citizen of the United States of America puts a lot of responsibility on me. But I will tell you that being a U.S. citizen also allows me to be more than a little removed from the struggles that many people face in other countries just for basic rights like speaking and printing your mind and having clean water. I'm not naive enough to believe that there is no one in this country that needs help. I know that there are people in this country that aren't living with basic necessities, but I'm aware that this country also does have the means, albeit limited in nature, to help. Other countries don't operate under the same system, yet I am so spoiled by the freedom, justice and regulations to protect my safety and well being, that I forget that other people in this world aren't mumbling and grumbling about how little their income tax refund is this year. In fact, they aren't saying anything because they are scared to death, literally. That's why we must never stop being proud to be an American. We must also realize how forgetful we can become when we complain about this or that government regulation, or because the president has interrupted our regularly scheduled programming for a speech to inform us on what is being done in our elected government and how that will influence our future. First we have the right to vote for our leaders, but then we are given the opportunity to hear about issues being discussed and then, don't forget the fact that if we don't like the plan, we can proudly state our opinion without fear of government reprisal. I forget how lucky I am to be an American all the time. I forget the fact that I live in a country that lets me believe in whatever deity I wish. I live in a country that offers me help if I would need it and so many more rights and privileges that I cannot even begin to list for fear that I would run out of space. So, this year, whether it be during the national anthem at a baseball game, at a brat fry, or watching the fireworks sporting the red, white, and blue, I will do my best to remember what I am really celebrating this Fourth of July. It's not a holiday to celebrate summer as it has become. It's a holiday to celebrate the fact that we are lucky enough to live in America and to thank many people who have given their lives so we can celebrate.
