The University of Iowa Jazz Repertory Ensemble directed by Brent Sandy and the Johnson County Landmark under the direction of John Rapson will share a concert of big band standards and arrangements at 8 p.m. today in the Second Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage is one of my favorite CDs, as definitive a statement of Hancock's jazz artistry as, say, A Song for My Father is for Horace Silver's craft, or Giant Steps for John Coltrane's. But Maiden Voyage , particularly the title track, has that sense of relentless, questing motion that energizes me about all journeying.
