Grunge [Columns]

The first ever compilation to feature grunge made it's way. Deep Six brought us a sex fector to the mix with Green River, Malfunkshun, Melvins, Skin Yard, Soundgraden, and U-Men. Later that same year another slam into the alternative world was released with Sub Pop's "Subpop 100" as well as a few contibutions from Olympia's K radio station.

Track of the Day: Pissed Jeans

I really miss Sub Pop 's Loser days. Back before Seattle had a Sound , the Northwest had a severely caustic, nihilistic musical aesthetic, egged on by punks who had beards when they didn't give a fuck about shaving.

Grunge Is Dead

Despite almost being hobbled right out of the gate by a pedestrian cover that makes it look like a quickie "Sounds of Seattle" chord book and weirdly giganto-sized text on the inside, you really have to look beyond the presentation here, for content is king.

Stereogum

New Real Estate - "Green River"

It's difficult making out all the lyrics floating around in "Green Rivers"'s echo chamber, but it'd be a nice change of course if the track was about either the Seattle proto-grunge crew, the Washington State serial killer Gary Ridgway who gave said band their name, or a straight-up CCR homage.

Pop music by Rick Massimo: Good golly, it's Creedence at Twin River

Creedence Clearwater Revisited visits R.I. on Friday night. With hits such as "Proud Mary," "Traveling Band," "Green River" and more, Creedence Clearwater Revival were probably the kings of the back-to-basics rock movement that supplanted psychedelia in the late '60s and early '70s. And five years after their first album, it was all done.
