IPL provides safe, affordable power
<![CDATA[In response to John Russell's Feb. 9 article about Indianapolis Power & Light Co.'s Harding Generation Station being the "No. 1 polluter in Marion County," I am disappointed in the continued lack of balanced reporting from The Star in regard to the ongoing claims made by the Sierra Club about IPL. The Star's assessment of the Toxic Release Inventory report is misleading, unfair and irresponsible since it provides no perspective or context. Keith Baugues, Indiana Department of Environmental Management's assistant commissioner, pointed out in a recent article posted to the IDEM website, "Industrial sources, including the IPL plant, account for less than 13 percent of the air toxics being emitted in Marion County. A review conducted of total air toxics emitted in Marion County for 2008 shows 49 percent comes from homes and small industries that are not required to report their releases to TRI. About 9 percent comes from non-road sources, such as construction equipment. Another 30 percent comes from automotive sources such as cars, trucks and buses." IPL is in compliance with all environmental laws and regulations. Public policy determines these laws and regulations and the appropriate balance between health and the environment, and IPL is meeting the standards set by public policy. IPL has invested approximately $280 million since 2000 at Harding Street in new controls, which have reduced emissions of sulfur dioxide by 45 percent, nitrogen oxides by 50 percent and particulate matter by 20 percent. Additionally, IPL plans to add environmental controls that will reduce mercury emissions by 85 percent. While both wind and solar are important components of IPL's generation portfolio, coal and natural gas remain cost-effective fuels and allow IPL to continue to produce reliable power while keeping prices affordable for our customers. IPL is committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable power in Indiana. Greg Fennig Vice President, Public Affairs Indianapolis Power & Light Co.
