Honduras united to defend its Constitution and Democracy

Part 1

Honduras has always been a peaceful country and the people have sometimes seemed a bit soft. But Hondurans have proved that they can unite and the can fight back when their peaceful and free way of life is threatened.
Former President Manuel Zelaya Rosales was destituted from his office as president of Honduras on Sunday, June 28th, when armed forces escorted him out of his residence and out of the country. That same day Congress followed the process of a constitutional substitution of the president, naming Roberto Micheletti, President of Congress at the time, as the new constitutional president of Honduras.
The news took everyone by surprise but for many it was a time of relief. Ex President Zelaya had been planning and organizing a supposed National Poll to simply ask the people if they agreed on a fourth box during the November elections. However, the poll had second intentions which would summon a National Constituent Assembly with the objective of changing the Constitution and current form of government in order to stay in power longer than it is allowed by the current Constitution.
The Supreme Court had already ruled against this act and had called it illegal. But Zelaya ignored the ruling and openly said nothing would stop him from making it happen.
The goal behind Mel’s intentions was to re write the Constitution of Honduras and establish a new form of government, just like Venezuelan Chief Hugo Chavez has done in the south. This would completely change the way of life that Hondurans have known and love.

Honduras united to defend its Constitution and Democracy

Part 2(due to forum limiting to 4000 characters)

Before the arrest of Zelaya, Hondurans had demonstrated they were not about to let their democracy be tumbled and taken away. Many peaceful manifestations took place throughout the country, especially in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ two main cities.
There were many organizations that promoted the different manifestations and “Plantones” where citizens gathered in crowds and spoke against Zelaya’s intentions and his behavior, and defended the Constitution, the application of the law, and the democracy of the country.
All manifestations took place in a peaceful manner, very well organized and called upon. The peace and order of the cities was never interrupted and people felt safe attending the manifestations.
Like never before Hondurans strongly united against the threat that was put upon the democracy. Fighting against a possible change in their way of life were organizations like the catholic church, many evangelical churches, the human rights commissioner, the general attorney, supreme electoral tribunal, national anticorruption commission, judicial power, colegio de abogados, national association of industries, civil society, and most political parties including the Liberal Party, Manuel Zelaya’s own party.
Zelaya`s behavior during the days before his arrest was defiant, disrespectful, overpowered and mocking.
Even though a small group of Zelaya’s followers has gone out to the streets in protest against the events of Sunday, the polls and the general feeling of the rest of the people in Honduras is still the same.
The international community has been strongly opposing the outcome of the recent events and is backing up Ex President Zelaya on his fight to return to power. But Honduras has a new Constitutional president and the people are behind him all the way.
The youth of Honduras has been dedicated to speak up and share information through many online engines. Everyone is helping out to let the world know that Hondurans stand strong against anyone who pretends to take over their democracy and freedom.
On Tuesday June 30th, Hondurans will invade the streets of Tegucigalpa in a peaceful march of support as a demonstration to the world of their support for the new President Micheletti and his Cabinet, with the hopes that the international community will understand their position and respect their choice of holding free elections in November and bring back peace and tranquility to the country.
