A lot of guitar players talk about Django Reinhardt as a major influence. The Belgianborn Reinhardt was a gypsy musician - he combined fastmoving swing with distinctly European forms of percussive rhythms, quicksilver chordal patterns and, most importantly, a rippling violin as a duet partner for his guitar.
I took note of the revival of "Gypsy jazz" sounds when I reviewed CDs by the Hot Clubs of Detroit and San Francisco in this column last year.
