Illinois native Eric Alexander , a mainstay of New York's hard-bop scene, wasn't yet born when saxophonists like John Coltrane, George Coleman, and Dexter Gordon were creating some of their greatest work in the 60s - he's 41 - but like other young players he's absorbed their music through recordings.
