One of the most heavily marketed and commercially successful artists in recent history, Alicia Keys has talent and smarts. No doubt about it, the former Alicia Augello Cook has benefited from a pricey hype campaign; one industry executive estimates that Clive Davis and his fledgling J Records label spent $20 million breaking her 2001 debut album, 'The Diary of Alicia Keys.'
She has gone on to sell 19 million albums worldwide and win nine Grammy Awards, and despite the heavy hand of Clive, it's difficult to begrudge her success. In a pop industry populated by windup toys, she comes across as the real deal: a classically trained pianist with a strong if not extravagant voice.
