It's strange to remember that Scottish folk musician Alasdair Roberts started his career as the central figure in the gloomy, experimental alt-folk trio Appendix Out , in much the same way that it feels odd to recall that Fairport Convention first made their name with a cover of a song by Los Angeles power-pop cult hero Emmit Rhodes .
