First Place Is Up for Grabs for United

D.C. United's meeting with the Chicago Fire tonight at RFK Stadium affords an opportunity to claim first place in the Eastern Conference, which would be a notable achievement for a club that failed to qualify for the MLS playoffs last year. But the importance of the match is magnified by the fact that United will not host another league game for five weeks and play six of its next seven on the road.

'It's a vital result,' United Coach Tom Soehn said yesterday. 'We have a lot of games coming up on the road after this one, so we have to make sure we take the points at home.'

United Tops Fire, Takes Over First Place

D.C. United's lead -- and bid for first place in MLS's Eastern Conference -- hung in the balance early in the second half last night at RFK Stadium. United's Josh Wicks, an unheralded goalkeeper entering the season, shifted on the goal line as Brian McBride, one of American soccer's most prolific scorers the past decade, prepared to take a penalty kick.

Considering the conversion rate of such situations and the characters involved, there was barely a doubt that the Chicago Fire would draw even.
