House Republicans say yes to Obama

The party that's acted as a bulwark against President Barack Obama's agenda suddenly looks like it will quickly agree to some of his biggest demands. House Republicans are poised to extend the Export-Import Bank's charter well into next year, despite decrying the agency as an antiquated vestige of crony capitalism.

Louisiana's clout at risk

If this year's U.S. Senate race in Louisiana seems particularly antagonistic, there's a reason beyond the obvious: If incumbent Mary Landrieu loses to either of her Republican challengers - U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy or political newcomer Rob Maness - it may be enough to tilt the Senate from blue to red. The Senate currently has 53 Democrats and 45 Republicans.

Robert McDonald , the newly confirmed secretary of veterans affairs, met with the media last week to outline some of his priorities as he tries to reinvent the agency after a serious scandal that included cover-ups of unacceptably long wait times for health care at some facilities., "I think the biggest take-away for me from talking to employees was that we need to open up the culture," said McDonald, the former head of Proctor & Gamble. "When I was going around, it seemed to me that employees thought of the hierarchy of VA as a pyramid.

Mulvaney Says Outside Groups Won't Define Conservative Credibility

Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, a front-runner in the race for chairmanship of the Republican Study Committee in the next Congress, is vowing to guard the independence of the GOP's right wing from influential outside groups like Heritage Action. "The days for somebody else defining what it means to be conservative will be over," Mulvaney said in an interview.

Congress may vote on war, after all

House GOP leaders appear set to push through a measure giving President Obama the authorization and money he has requested to train Syrian rebels for the fight against ISIS - a rare display of unity between Republicans and the president. This would be separate from any measure authorizing Obama's ramping up of American military operations, which apparently isn't going to get any Congressional vote.

Fate of Obama's ISIS Plan Hangs on the House

Now that President Obama has made his case for military action against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, it falls to those in Congress who have worked to stymie his agenda at every turn to round up support for a key piece of his strategy. House Speaker John Boehner and his lieutenants will ask their restive conference to vote to allow the president to arm pro-Western Syrian rebels, potentially as a part of a government funding bill.
