FOLLOWING on from my letter about shops in Spon Lane, West Bromwich, in The Bugle I also have many memories of growing up there after reading Mike Fenton's article in The Bugle . As a boy of seven or eight in the late 1950s it was a good time.

Youngsters on a West Bromwich estate will soon discover the delights of growing their own fruit and vegetables, thanks to a new community allotment. Lyng Community Association has taken on a plot at Bromford Lane Allotments to encourage children and young people on the Lyng to get digging, develop their green-fingered talents and try a taste of the good life.

MISSING: Lyndon Ross, who has not been since yesterday afternoon, could be in Worcestershire

Police in Sandwell are appealing to the public tom help find Lyndon Ross, 39, who was last seen leaving his home in Moorlands Court, at 1.30pm on Monday, September 8- he said he was going for a walk along Clent Hills. Sergeant Ben Dolan, from West Bromwich police station, said: "It is out of character for Lyndon to go missing like this and as time passes without hearing from him, we are becoming increasingly worried about him.

Tipton family pet could lose leg following mauling by bull terrier-type dog

A Tipton family's pet dog could lose its leg following a horrific attack by a bull terrier-type dog in the Black Country. The powerful hound savaged the tiny Jack Russell, called Scamp, and only released its grip on the pet when a nearby resident threw water over it during the terrifying incident in Grace Road.

A family of five leapt to safety from a bedroom window after a severe fire swept through their home this morning. A fire service spokeswoman said the alarm was raised at 5.07am today, when it was reported that some people may have been trapped inside.

West Bromwich shop regulars repaid Mom on pay day for loaned cigs

My own particular memories centre round the West Smethwick end of Spon Lane and a few years after most of the dates to which the article refers. My parents bought a shop in Spon Lane in either late 1952 or early 1953 as I do recall celebrating the Queen's Coronation on a rather wet June 2, 1953, in a specially cleared Crowder's Workshop behind Burrow's Hardware Shop.

West Bromwich care worker to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court accused of attempted murder

Melissa Swift will appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court to answer the charge, along with a further charge of threats to kill. The 23-year-old of Hamblets Road, West Bromwich, was arrested on August 4 after police were informed that several people at Goldfield Court in West Bromwich had been taken ill with food poisoning type symptoms, All those taken ill have made a good recovery and there have been no further cases reported since the launch of the police investigation.

Our thanks to the Warley reader who sent in the Smethwick boxing-bill and a press cutting which reports an interview with Sam Burgoyne more than fifty years ago, in which he informed the 'Weekly News reporter' about his sons - Sam Jnr. and Wally's 'hearthrug' introduction to The Noble Art, their subsequent progress, and introduced him to their manager and 'stable-mates' at his Langley 'trai In his younger days, old Sam Burgoyne, had a reputation for being a good man in any sort of scrap.
