Otley's MP calls for conference to build on Tour de France boost

Otley MP Greg Mulholland , centre, promoting the Tour de France in Westminster in June with fellow local MPs Julian Smith , left, and Andrew Jones OTLEY'S MP is calling for a conference to make sure the local area receives a long term boost following the Tour de France. Tens of thousands of people turned out in Arthington, Pool-in-Wharfedale and Otley to welcome the famous race's riders on Saturday, July 5. Greg Mulholland says he was delighted with the impact the Grand Depart had on local tourism, sport and business - and wants to help draw up a strategy to build upon it.

Former Sunday school teacher branded 'a sexual predator of monstrous proportions' jailed for 14 years

A FORMER Sunday school teacher branded "a sexual predator of monstrous proportions" has been jailed for 14 years for sexually abusing two girls. John Laister, 72, was yesterday jailed after being found guilty of 11 charges of rape, indecent assault and indecency on two girls aged under 16. He had previously admitted that he indecently assaulted a teenage girl while he was working as a "house parent" at the now-closed Hilton Grange Children's Home in Bramhope, near Otley , where he lived with his family, in the early 1970s.

AN OTLEY group that has been producing audio versions of the local news for 30 years is preparing to celebrate National Talking Newspapers Week. Otley and District Talking Newspaper first started making recordings of news items and distributing them to blind and partially sighted residents in 1984.

Self-confessed child sex abuser denies rape of one girl and molesting another

CONFESSED child abuser has denied repeatedly raping a girl at a residential special school and molesting another teenager during Sunday school sessions at a Bradford church. Father-of-three John Laister, 72, has already admitted that he indecently assaulted the teenage girl while he was working as a "house parent" at the Hilton Grange school in Bramhope, near Otley , in the early 1970s.

CHRIS Wain produced a stunning spell of bowling to put relegation-threatened Guiseley on the way to victory and end the five-match winning run of third-placed Beckwithshaw in Aire-Wharfe League Division One.
