Police warn public to stay away from helicopter crash scene

Emergency services have urged the public to stay away from the scene of this afternoon's helicopter crash at Flamborough. The air ambulance has now left the site, but the RAF search and rescue helicopter remains there alongside police and coastguards, and both Bridlington and Flamborough lifeboat crews launched at around 1.45pm.

Anger as Malton superstore plan is not reviewed

A CONTROVERSIAL decision by Ryedale District Council to allow a supermarket to be built on one of its own car parks will stand after the Secretary of State decided not to review the case. The Department of Communities and Local Government has written to the authority to confirm the inspector would not be calling in the planning application for a supermarket on Malton 's Wentworth Street car park.

Street Angels showing their worth to public

Malton and Norton's Street Angels helped 14 people in distress during one three-month period, a new report has revealed. During their six patrols across April, May and June, it also saw them hand out 29 pairs of flip flops to women walking with difficulty in their high-heels, give out 11 bottles of water and pick up 37 empty bottles and cans of alcohol.

Campaign aims to restore rail link

Almost 700 people signed an internet petition organised by the Whitby to York rail link group within 48 hours of it appearing online and campaigners say that they are "very confident" of succeeding in their aims. The group, formed only 18 days ago, are petitioning central government in the hope of securing funding which would allow six miles of track to be re-laid between Rillington and Pickering, thus connecting Whitby with the line leading directly to York.

Huntsman appears in court

Kennel huntsman Barry Andrews, 33, is accused of interfering with a badger sett in woods at Bossall, Malton, by restricting the entrance. Scarborough Magistrates were told the case is linked to that of Tom Holt,a Z the joint master of the Middleton Hunt, who appeared in court accused of a fox-hunting offence at a previous hearing.

Apprentices start out on new career path

Records continue to tumble at Derwent Training Association which has welcomed its largest ever class of apprentices for the third year running. Fifty seven youngsters will now spend one day a week at the purpose-built training centre on York Road Industrial Estate, Malton, with the remainder of the week learning their trades at engineering businesses across the region.

Man jailed for vicious attack on girlfriend

Police with Taser guns confronted a man after a vicious attack on his partner in which she was threatened with a knife. The attack happened in the couple's bedroom in Norton where Orville Lee pointed a kitchen knife at his girlfriend's throat telling her he could kill her.

Homes meeting listens to concerns

The latest public consultation surrounding plans to build 500 homes in Malton has listened to residents' concerns about the impact of the development on the town's roads, schools and healthcare. Saturday's event at the Milton Rooms was organised by the Fitzwilliam Estate to keep residents informed about the progress of the planning application which has been given backing by Malton town Council.

Anger at closure of level crossing

PLANS to close the level crossing between Malton and Norton over a two month period have been met by anger from flood campaigners and local residents. Network Rail is carrying out essential engineering work on the railway line near Malton station and further along the track.

Good and bad news for A64 road schemes

The leader of Ryedale council said there was good and bad news regarding road schemes aimed at improving the A64 . Councillor Linda Cowling welcomed news that improvements will be carried out in Sand Hutton on the trunk road as part of the multi-million pound development of the government's Food and Environent Research Agency.
