City-bound commuters from Crowhurst, Battle, Robertsbridge and Etchingham stations found out last week that the direct rail service has been saved, thanks to a determined effort by area businesses with East Sussex County Council, local authorities and MPs.

Bookies halve odds for City of Culture bid
Earlier this month, William Hill made the Hastings and Bexhill UK City of Culture bid the rank outsider, with odds of 25/1. Last week it was revealed that Battle, Rye and rural Rother had joined the bid, which was rebranded the Hastings and 1066 Country bid.

Eight residents trapped in burning building
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "Two fire engines from Bexhill responded and an informative message was received from crews at 7.33am confirming smoke issuing and outlining that people were trapped by the smoke within the three storey building.
