A coastguard spokesman said: "We received a 999 call from a man on the beach who had walked to the tideline and then a thick fog had descended." Searchers made noise including shouting and horns to help locate the man, said to be from the local area, because according to the coastguard even strong lights failed to penetrate the fog.
