Cumbrian teens hailed heroes after saving animals from barn fire

Two teenagers were today hailed as heroes after they ran into a burning barn to save livestock from a blaze. The best friends, both aged 17, were driving past a farm in north Cumbria when they saw flames engulfing the outbuilding.

Road near Carlisle to close for five days for resurfacing

Cumbria County Council has revealed it will be carrying out the 90,000 work on four sections of the C1014 covering almost 1km in total. A council spokesman said he hoped the temporary closure would only be in place from 7am each day until about 6pm, but the evening reopening of the road might not always be possible.

Vandals target new, unopened Carlisle play park

The incident took place at the brand new facility in Dale End Road, Harraby, at about 5.45pm on Sunday. A spokeswoman for Carlisle City Council confirmed that fencing had been ripped down and a few panels damaged, grass surface mats were pulled up in places and a litter bin was burned out.

Carlisle woman apologises to court for 'disgusting behaviour'

Simone Elizabeth Gibson, 30, of Cumwhinton Road, Harraby, Carlisle, admitted using threatening, abusive words or behaviour and assaulting a member of door staff at the Caledonian pub in Botchergate. Prosecutors told magistrates that she and her partner had been out drinking in the city on August 8, but became unruly at about 1am.

A TEENAGER who was told he had a "secure place" in sixth form has been left baffled after being turned away on the first day of term. Reace Kidd, of Dalegarth Avenue, Harraby, Carlisle, is believed to be one of three children turned away from Richard Rose Central Academy's sixth form.

Shamed pensions director sacked by Swiss finance firm

One of the bosses of a firm named and shamed for misusing clients' pension funds has been sacked from his senior role with a top finance firm in Switzerland. The dismissal of Anton Taylor came days after The Cumberland News contacted his employer and revealed his involvement in the disgraced company Quintillion Asset Management Ltd. Quintillion collapsed two years ago with debts of more than 2.4 million, leaving investors with huge losses.

A son whose elderly father has been charged with murdering his wife at their remote Cumbrian home will today return from the United States. A Carlisle Crown Court judge heard that the only relatives of 81-year-old John Michael Parry were abroad, but due to fly back to Britain.
