Bishop Auckland castle welcomes larger than life Bosley Boar statue

Visitors to a North East castle have been invited to enjoy a new attraction - which threatens to hog the limelight. A larger than life boar sculpture has taken up residence in Auckland Castle's 151-acre medieval Deer Park, after specially commissioned by the Auckland Castle Trust in honour of the property's furry mascot, Bosley Boar.

GP urges public to support ambulance chake-up

SERVING GP who is also a senior figure in NHS management has urged a sceptical Teesdale audience to support controversial changes to ambulance crews. Dr Stewart Findlay, chief clinical officer of the Durham Dales, Easington and Sedgefield Clinical Commissioning Group, told a packed public meeting in Middleton-in-Teesdale village hall that the CCG's plans had the best interests of Durham Dales residents at heart.

British Engines powers ahead with new North-East jobs, apprenticeships and investment

EAST engineering firm has increased the size of its apprenticeship intake by 50 per cent as part of its on-going growth plans. It follows an announcement revealed by The Northern Echo last Wednesday that the group, which includes Newcastle-based BEL Valves, expects to create up to 100 jobs over the next three years.

Unions pledge to fight hospital trust's plans to make 350 staff redundant

The County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Darlington Memorial Hospital, the University Hospital of North Durham, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and a string of smaller community hospitals, has told unions that up to 350 posts are at risk and could go by early next year. Although trust bosses stressed that they were looking to minimise redundancies and redeploy people where possible, Darlington's Labour MP Jenny Chapman described the announcement as "grim".

UNION officials have confirmed that the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has told them it wishes to make a total of 350 staff redundant. Martin Wright, regional officer for health for the Unite union, said his union has received official notification from the trust, which runs hospitals in Durham City, Darlington and Bishop Auckland that it was looking to cut 350 jobs.

Soldier's parents overwhelmed by community support

THE parents of a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan before Christmas praised a community for its support during a ceremony to unveil his name on a village war memorial. Captain Richard Holloway, of Hamsterley, near Bishop Auckland , was hit by enemy fire while on operations east of Kabul with the Royal Engineers on December 23 last year.

Family tribute to motorcyclist Andrew Peacock who died in County Durham road accident

A family has paid tribute to their "much loved son, brother and uncle" who died after swerving his motorcycle to avoid a tractor and trailer. At approximately 8.30pm on Thursday, Andrew Peacock, 20, from the Toft Hill area of Bishop Auckland was riding his motorcycle along the A68 between Witton-le-Wear and Toft Hill, when the accident occurred at its junction with Saunders Avenue.
