WaPo- One need not read past the first question posed in the Dec. 21 editorial " President Obama's 'betrayal.' " Why has the president lifted economic restrictions without requiring "significant steps toward democracy"? Does the failure of that objective not matter? Have 50 years of isolation, economic sanctions and U.S. political power and influence exercised in every way not demonstrated that failure? President Richard Nixon recognized in his opening to China that nothing changes unless we are willing to engage our opponents, reach their people, negotiate our differences and make compromises that lead to progress.
