Goldstein's Return Is Short But Very Sweet
It wasn't the homecoming result he was seeking, but Rockville native Paul Goldstein considers his brief appearance at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic memorable nonetheless.
Because of a wild-card exemption, Goldstein played in a men's doubles first-round match with rising star and Georgia graduate John Isner, who began his professional career last year and beat four top 100 players at this event (No. 12 Tommy Haas, No. 47 Benjamin Becker, No. 54 Gael Monfils and No. 73 Tim Henman).
The pair hadn't been played alongside each other before, and they won't have the opportunity to do so again. They lost to American Travis Parrott and Slovakian Filip Polasek, 7-6, 6-3, at William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center yesterday. Parrott and Polasek advance to face South African Rik De Voest and Australian Ashley Fisher in the second round.
Since returning to the Olympic fold in 1988, the sport has produced a role-call of surprise champions including Marc Rosset and Nicolas Massu who have left the big names trailing in their wake.
