Found the commentator ( I think his name was Paul)very disrespectful, if he didn't want to do it he should have said. I think he should be sacked.

I am appalled and outraged at the comments in the commentary - the insult to Michael Jackson's daughter Paris making her "debut" was totally inappropriate and disgusting!

I have been annoyed before but not like this, I am not his biggest fan but this commentary was disgraceful. Mocking his daughter, and distasteful throughout. I have just complained on their website. Surely they could have seen what was happening, they should have cut the commentary immediately. It was more like listening to the Eurovision commentary - I am appalled - and we pay our license for this.

The commentary from Paul Gambacini was offensive, rude and completely uncalled for at an event for this nature. He clearly was not a fan of Michael Jackson so should not have been involved in the event.

I actually couldn't believe the commentary! They were both so inappropriate and distasteful! I was appalled by the comment about Michael Jackson's daughter's breakdown being her 'debut'. The commentary was second rate and ruined the televised ceremony for me! Seriously, where did the BBC find this Paul character? Shocking!

I'm glad we're not the only ones. That American commentator got me really angry. Picking holes by focusing on the little details. I was disgusted. It was just another show to him. He couldn't even sit still through the minutes silence at the beginning. He gave it about 10 seconds then started talking rubbish. He should be sacked or at least not allowed to work on similar events in the future. What an idiot.

I had to complain to the BBC and got this back:

Thanks for your e-mail regarding 'Michael Jackson Memorial' broadcast on the 7 July.

We apologise if you were upset or unhappy with the commentary on the Michael Jackson Memorial event. It certainly wasn’t our intention to come across as insensitive or disrespectful in any way and we very much regret if you felt this way.

Unfortunately, the BBC had no control over the event and very little information about its content right up until we went on air. Even after the Memorial began, it proved highly unpredictable with unexpected and unexplained gaps in the event coverage.

The commentators were, therefore, coping with an extremely challenging situation and striving to piece together as much information as possible for viewers. We’re very sorry that in the midst of these difficult circumstances some of their comments appeared misjudged and inappropriate and we hope that this didn’t detract too much from what was an extraordinarily moving Memorial service.

Both Trevor Nelson and Paul Gambaccini are huge fans of Michael Jackson’s music and have enormous respect for the legacy he has created.

We'd like to assure you that we've registered your comments on our audience log. This is the internal report of audience feedback which we compile daily for all programme makers and commissioning executives within the BBC, and also their senior management. It ensures that your points, and all other comments we receive, are circulated and considered across the BBC.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us with your concerns.

Regards

the comments were rubbish (during the memorial)
Typical of aging, faded - rock 'n roller (Gambacini) but, really, Nelson ought to have done A lot BETTER than that !
