A WebmasterWorld thread asks if DMOZ is still relevant in 2009? DMOZ is a legendary web directory and has a ton of history.

The web is still in the beginning, since the " Web Big Bang " in march 1989, the web is expanding faster and faster.

There's been a LOT of discussion here about free and paid directories and how they are valued by the SEs, so I thought you may want to watch this.
