Sleep Problems Common In Kids With ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is a behavioral disorder, usually first diagnosed in childhood, that is characterized by inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Children with ADHD appear likely to experience sleep problems, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. Sleep problems in these children may be associated with poorer child psychosocial quality of life, child daily functioning, caregiver mental health and family functioning.

Caused by boring teachers, dull subject matter, and lack of excercise.

Some people with wider keyboards or narrower fingers would spell that 'exercise'.

HOW many of those DIAGNOSED with ADHD were misdiagnosed? Happens lots.

Another question that begs an answer is, could maybe the medication be causing these sleep problems?

I would never ever ever ever ever give my daughter psychosis drugs. Ridilyn, none of it, the cure is worse that the condition. It is also misdiagnosed regularly so there are medicated children out there that don't need medication.

If anyone told me I was neglecting her because I refuse to drug her would be in for a rude awakening. I have heard of CPS trying to take away children whose parents refuse to drug them. Well they can NOT force me to drug my child PERIOD, they will be sorry they ever tried. I doubt that will be an issue, just had to express my opinion. Why do we drug our children so?

Being an adult with ADD, I applaud what you are doing, but you may want to rethink it.

When I was in my early teens I was diagnosed after some pretty exhaustive testing. It affects that transmission of information from one are of the brain to the other and can manifest itself in many different ways. For me it was problems with impulsivity and difficulty with my ability to retain information.

This resulted in problems with my behavior- getting in trouble at school frequently- and with my grades. Its funny that when you don't do the work (often through simply forgetting to do it or losing it between school and home) that it is hard to get the good grades that your parents want.

I was able to overcome the grades through intense time management practices, but the impulse control problem was always there. I graduated high school and decided to take some time off from school to get myself together and ready for college.

I started college about 1 year after I graduated high school and found that I was right back to the problems with completing assignments and retaining the information. By now I was a legal adult and my doctor suggested that we try some low dosages of ADD medications to see if they helped.

Boy, did they help! I went from being on the academic warn list at my college to being on the Dean's list with a 3.8 GPA within a year! I graduated with honors and am now working in the field that I love.

To this day I still take small dosages of ADD medication, specifically Adderal, to replace whatever it is that is missing in my brain, most likely some kind of neurotransmitter. I can honestly say that on the days that I forget my medication or run out, my productivity at work is spotty at best, and I can't seem to finish any project that I start. When I remember to take my meds I am able to focus completely at the tasks I am working on and complete the projects as well.

I agree with you that the meds aren't for everyone, but how do you know whether they will help or not unless you try?

It does seem that there has been much misinformation about the condition and the medications, but the changes that I have seen in my own life far outweigh any stigma that may be associated with the medications themselves.

I think that the scientists are missing the point.

Since there is a large number of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, AND sleep disorders/ sleep deficit, then there could be a connection. I beleive that connection is to the large number of children MISDIAGNOSED as having ADHD.

I have seen during my life, a large number of children who school officials and doctors have dianosed with MANY different "conditions", when in fact they are actually caused by sleep problems or child neglect/child abuse/child molestation.

I have seen children that SEEM to be impossible to control and teach simple things to, change dramatically after they have been put into a situation where they are required to have much more sleep and that are on a more regular sleep schedule. Too many parents/adults think that children should be awake the same number of hours that they are awake. Please understand that I realize that it is not always easy to get kids to sleep, but it is worth the effort, when the children become easier to work with during their waking hours.

Because of these misdiagnosis, the children that REALLY have ADHD do not get the help/schooling that they need and deserve.
At the same time, the children who need help from these other situations are NOT getting the help they should be getting from social services (Dept. of family/children services, etc.)

To people who actually have ADHD, I am NOT blaming sleep problems with your very real and serious medical condition.

I am glad that you have controlled the symtoms of your ADD. I am in no way saying they might not be helpful, my step brother was "diagnosed" with ADHD, on ridilyn at puberty when he came to live with us, it was NOT helping the behaviour rather complecating it because he was MISDIAGNOSED. The ridilyn was acting like speed (which it is pharmecutical speed) My stepdad (daddy) took him off it, his behaviour improved dramatically. His problem was lack of interest from his mother in taking the time to raise him and pay attention to him.
I say what I say, because I don't believe that drugs are always the answer, especially pharm's. But it does work for some, and if there were a serious problem with my child I would address it.
I have seen many a kid now a days in my daughter's generation that are just immediately labled without proper examinations as ADHD. I think that when we were kids they were a bit more detailed and by more qualified not overworked doctors.
Schools are quick to label ADHD for simple behaviour problems that most likely stem from lack of discipline at home. IF I thought the findings that my daughter was ADHD (no one has even suggested it FYI) then I would pay to have several opinions made before I drugged her. IF it were to be concluded by more than one professional, not just the school counselor, then I might consider it if I could not find a natural alternative.
But I appreciate you sharing your story & in no way in my rush to post intended to discount when the drugs really do have a more signifigant effect to control symptoms than the side effects risk. Suicide is up in those taking anti depressents and ADHD drugs, I have to think that is due to misdiagnosis and the side effects for those diagnosed properly but could maybe control the symptoms through an alternative source.
I think it is wonderful that you have managed to be in control of your life with your challenges with ADD. I am 37, when they were diagnosing these disorders, they were much more attentive and dug in deep to make sure they got it right. Just my opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs, but I fear that maybe some of these patients with "ADHD" are getting poor sleep because of the medication.
