I've found God, says man who cracked the genome

The scientist who led the team that cracked the human genome is to publish a book explaining why he now believes in the existence of God and is convinced that miracles are real.

Francis Collins, the director of the US National Human Genome Research Institute, claims there is a rational basis for a creator and that scientific discoveries bring man 'closer to God'.

I thought the article an interesting source of information and non-threatening to different viewpoints. And, it was a pleasurable read.

With all due respect to atheist and agnostic scientists, one of the reasons science as a study of reality has flourished in Western monotheistic cultures is the cultural insistence on a universe bound by "laws" (gravity, light, energy manipulation, etc.). The concept of law requires a/some "law-maker(s)," with the implication that the fewer fingers on the wall the more consistent the laws are manifested. Without laws, processes are random and capricious, which reality is only in quanta.

Whether this is fact or not is irrelevant; it works, so we use it that way. So the defection from the "rational" camp by people such as Francis Collins is inevitable and expectable. Besides: there are scores of atheistic and agnostic young scientists coming out of our modern universities to replace him. That, too, is inevitable and expectable.

I didn't know God was lost! He's been looking for men, women, and children for whom He will convict, convince, and redeem--Luke 19: 10(KJV or NASB). I'm glad that over 43 years ago He sought me out and saved me by His wonderful grace!

Oh pleaaaaaase. Another reason for holy rollers to "praise god." You don't need god to do good, you don't need god to be a kind human being. I'm tired of the hypocracy in the name of god. People go out and treat other people bad, go to church on Sunday and think it's all washed away.

I am thrilled that it took scietists this long to find God.
If they would just pick up the bible they would see that God has always been there.
God is just waiting for man to realize that He has always been here and will always be there for all mankind.
I think poeple need to realize this, and not just rely on some scientists. They are not always right, ok, maybe 1% of the time.

Unwraveling human dna gives us the power to play God. Imagine the possibilities of a nation or a tryant to be able to select any race of people and wipe them out with a dna wmd? In understanding our genetic makeup, we can destroy a race of people with or without prejudice. God loves us all and that's why we are all here. We place too much trust in man.

Actually, in his book Collins explicitly rejects the Deism. In fact it says in the article that he believes in THEISTIC evolution. Collins holds that Deists believe God created the universe with rational laws, then basically left it to its own devices. Theists, however believe that God has intent in the universe, meaning He/She/It influences or intends things to happen. Therefore, God created the universe with particular physical laws, knowing that life would be created and that evolution would create Humankind.

Firstly, this site calls itself Science and Technology, but apparentl doesn't know the difference between discovering the double helical sturcture of DNA and "cracking the genome." What "genome"?

Secondly, what does it have to do with S&T that an old man facing his own extinction reaches for a crutch in the form of a belief in his own immorality (a fantasy more likely to be found in an egomaniac like James Watson, by the way)?

The notion that it is something new for scientists to believe in God appears not to have penetrated the minds of many Americans. "The Ten Proofs For The Existence Of God" have been around for centuries. That one should choose to consider them proofs is only a matter of taste, otherwise all rational people would be swayed by them. Faith in God or faith in no God. Take your pick, but it is not yet Science, except in the mish-mash minds of mis-educated people who do religion no favors calling it science.

Wow, I'm surprised that someone else thinks as I do. We CAN have both, nature and religion. Have you ever been overwhelmed by the absolute beauty of nature? How can you not believe that a higher power had a hand in it? Have you ever seen a circular rainbow? the Northern lights? a snow devil? When nature puts on a spectacular show, also believe it's being shown to you on purpose.

Those looking for god will always find it in their own delusion, some will find it on a bank window, and others will find god in the shape of a cloud and some scientist will find it an atom, but one thing all these people have in common is their god delusion....WAKE UP...CONSCIOUSNESS IS GOD...

I'm wondering if he will now face ridicule from the scientific community.
Will his future work be considered "biased" and "non-scientific" because of his new-found religious beliefs?
Will he become a quack now?
Stay tuned.
