International hoops scene

Serbia had looked really good in its previous three games, beating 5-0 Greece by 18, walloping 5-1 Brazil by 28, and putting up 90 points against a France defense that had just shut down Spain at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup . But you don't really know how good you are until you play against the best.

FIBA World Cup: France come back to beat Lithuania 95-93, take bronze

It took a fourth quarter rally but France eventually took bronze at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup on the back of a big night for Nicolas Batum. France had a horribly short turnaround before this one, hitting the floor just 18 hours after losing to Serbia in Friday's semi-final, but Joffrey Lauvergne showed no signs of fatigue in the early going.

Faried: Team USA 'wanted to beat' Spain

Kenneth Faried was the only player willing to say what presumably at least a few members of Team USA are feeling after advancing to a gold-medal game that won't have Spain on the other side. Following a comprehensive 96-68 trouncing of Lithuania in Thursday night's semifinals, Faried admitted that he's "disappointed" Spain won't be the opponent in Sunday's championship game of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup because he "wanted to beat them in their own country."

Hang Time: Sweet 16

It's fine to assume that the United States and Spain will face off in the gold medal game of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup on Sept. 14. But it wouldn't be wise to wait until then to pay attention to the action in Barcelona and Madrid, because there's plenty of good basketball to be played between the 16 remaining teams.
