Glad to hear this. We have been robbed several times.
Have cameras but the crooks are pretty skilled at avoiding being recognized.
May cut down on their drug purchases on our dollars!

Need to go one step further and only issue a paper check for scrap metal. Paying cash leaves no paper trail. Reputable dealers WILL only issue a check.

well, it is about time. The last 3 houses I have bought have all of the copper robbed from them. Most of the time, they only get a few hundred dollars, but the time and effort it takes to replace it is unreal.

I wonder what the penalties are for companies that are caught paying for scrap to those without the ID card and thumb print? I hope its substantial.

last year, a job site i was on got hit twice.
both times brand new a/c units and waterpipe were taken.

come to find out, it was the the man who was installing the a/c units coming back and taking em' out.
he was dumb enough to come back in hid co. truck and a resident nearby came over and told the G.C.

so it ain't just crackheads stealing the stuff.

but this law is a step in the right direction.

Right on!! Don't forget the substation in Blount Co. That was no meth user for sure.

On the other hand what if the scrapper is dirty? Recently some material on the rail road that is used to secure the rails to the ties were being stolen and taken to a scrapper in Claiborne Co. and they were buying from the theives knowing that it was railroad material. It seems that you just can't win and laws are just for honest people.

I know this probably won't make a huge difference but at least they are trying. I wonder though, why don't these crackheads just get a job?

The one thing that escapes all of us trying to do the right thing is the willingness of prosecutors to take on these cases. Prosecutors will not prosecute individuals unless there is absolute proof of where the items were stolen from. Their answer is to cripple the revenue availability for thieves in hopes of curtailing theft. That may work if and only if there is sufficient law enforcement to catch unruly buyers. The copper thiefs will simply move to the next county or state, but the losses will continue.

I think the check idea would work better.Follow the paper trail.
Here the newest thing they are stealing is the brass fittings off of the fire sprinkler stand pipes. Putting people in danger and disabling the fire sprinklers for a hundred bucks. Bunch of jerks. I bet what they are selling for a couple of hundred bucks, costs a couple thousand to replace.
They are starting to engrave them.

Hell the man hole covers have all been replaced. They all say Broward County all over them now.

yes, it is wrong for people to steal this stuff and i agree that the ones doing it should be prosecuted or have their home stripped completely?? But anyways, the news lies like he@#, you CAN NOT sell copper or copper coils with your photo ID and thumbprint, I know I took some to two different places today and was told by the mexicans yu have air lysence? in other words you have to be certified in heating and air conditioning to sell copper alumnium coils. thanks for the lies news people and senator burchett!!!

No you don't. I know someone who sold some and nothing was said about having to be certified. Guess it depends on where to take it. And NO this person didn't have it illegally. It was scrap from their own stuff.

Which 2 places did you take your copper too? The scrap dealer probably isn't licensed by the department of commerce and insurance. If the dealer had been, you would have been asked for your photo ID and a thumbprint.

The mark of the beast is after the Rapture. If you are saved you don't have to worry about that.
I'm not. I won't be here.

I work at one of the most reputable scrap metal recycling centers in Johnson City TN. We follow all state laws which require us to keep on file for three years, a copy of the picture Id and all cash trasactions with our customers. We have a solid paper trail even though we are paying cash.
Theives are everywhere in every type of business.
I think it is said because I know personally that most of the people that come into our shop are elder/disabled people that are near poverty level.
I beleive the only reson there is such a focus on this now is because God fobid if your average workin Joe makes a buck without reporting to the IRS.
God Bless Us!

Can you sell railroad track for scrap in Tn? There is a farm auction close to me, and there is about 100 yards of it that will be sold. but I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't re-sell it...
