Developer seeks rural Nevada water for $30 billion project

Wealthy Reno businessman and powerbroker Harvey Whittemore urged the state water engineer on Monday to approve his plans to pump rural Nevada water to a huge, $30 billion development he's building about 50 miles north of Las Vegas.

While critics questioned whether Lake Valley would dry up when groundwater is pumped from there more than 100 miles south to Whittemore's Coyote Springs project, Whittemore said he's being 'extraordinarily conservative' to ensure that doesn't happen.

The federal government, which controls most of the land in Lake Valley, already has dropped its opposition to Whittemore's plan to send up to 12,000 acre-feet of water a year to Coyote Springs. That occurred after Whittemore agreed to an elaborate monitoring plan to ensure that BLM resources in the valley wouldn't be harmed. Read more

I believe it has been said before, that they should leave the water ALONE and stop trying to take the water out of the north . We in the north do not conced to this kind of anarchy . From this point of observation, I can only see that the people in VEGASS have a problem with the word NO!

From a geological perspective---Bad Idea!!! To rely exclusicely a source of H2o from a huge network of pumping fixtures to extract vast groundwater resourches is subject to interruption of consistant H20 to that community by unforseen factors of the Earth by interjection of Sir Isaac Newton 3rd.law of "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." For example:sink holes as was experienced by Mandalay Bay htl/Casino and too in various locals of the continental U.S. Furthermore, this underground reservoir absolutely can not be replenished rapidly or sufficiently by natural circumstances to avoid the problems briefly herein alluded to. Egotistical ambition that if allowed for development will in due time create multiple problems to that community for sustained, reliable source of H20 to serve all needs. This fellow Whittmore is obviously deficient in knowledge of physical science academics.
