McCain puts focus on Democrats

“He certainly keeps things interesting”

ALEXANDRIA, Va.

- Sen.

John McCain continued his march to the Republican nomination Tuesday, sweeping the three Potomac Primary contests despite a surprisingly strong showing by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in Virginia .

McCain's delegate tally now makes it arithmetically impossible for Huckabee or anyone else to win more delegates than him, making the Arizona senator the presumptive Republican nominee. His victories, following a long year of ups and downs, allowed him to begin challenging the Democrats. Read more

Court Upholds 17-Year-Old Voting In Some Primaries

Maryland's highest court has found no conflict between the voter eligibility requirements of the state Constitution and a state law that allows some 17-year-olds to vote in nonpartisan primary elections.

The decision upholds a lower court decision allowing teenagers who will turn 18 before the November election and who registered to vote by last month's deadline to cast ballots Tuesday in primary races for county school boards and district judges.

The court, however, ruled those voters may not vote in "special or municipal" elections, including Tuesday's Washington County referendum on charter-home rule. Read more

Md. awards $3.4 million to UM Nursing School

“Given the economic situation in the country and the economic situation in the state, it's not possible to do it all this year”

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced yesterday that he is allocating $3.4 million to the University of Maryland School of Nursing to help alleviate a growing shortage of nurses in the state.

The school will use the money mostly to hire more faculty, but also to expand classroom space and buy equipment. Over the next few years, the school hopes to add 120 undergraduate students to its current enrollment of 600.

Plans also call for adding 120 masters and doctoral students to its current 900. The school needs to add roughly one faculty member for every 10 new students, said Dean Janet D. Allan. Read more
