With just over six weeks to go until votes are counted in Oregon's May 20 primary, U.S. Senate Democratic hopeful Jeff Merkley has launched the first major TV ad buy of the campaign, hoping to raise his still-scanty name recognition among voters.

Quinn reaffirms support for recall, says Blagojevich might be the target of one
Lieutenant Governor Patrick Quinn is urging Illinois residents to push for putting a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would allow for the recall of elected officials
And in pushing for the proposal he has long supported, Quinn said yesterday in Chicago that Governor Rod Blagojevich would almost certainly be the target of a recall attempt if the amendment passes.
But Quinn stopped short of saying whether Blagojevich should be recalled.
Quinn made the comment at a news conference to urge support of the recall bill coming up for a final vote in the Illinois House early this week. Read more

State senator suggests possible cap on foreign students at U of I
A state senator from Chicago says the University of Illinois might consider placing caps on numbers of international students it accepts.
Ed Maloney broached the possibility after one institute found Illinois' 41,000-student Urbana-Champaign campus has more than 5,000 foreign students.
That's more than any other public U.S. university.
The Democrat -- who chairs the Senate's Higher Education Committee -- cites projections that Illinois high schools will graduate more students in coming years. Read more
