LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Organizers of a major California music festival are offering a $10,000 reward and four festival tickets for life in exchange for ex-Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters' two-story inflatable pig, which was lost on Sunday night.
Waters' signature pig was seen floating away during his closing set at the three-day Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival, held in the desert east of Los Angeles.
The giant flying pig, part of Pink Floyd's stage show since their 1977 album "Animals" featuring the song "Pigs on the Wing," broke free from its tethers above the Coachella crowd and drifted off. Read more

5.2 Magnitude Quake Hits California
“It wasn't like one of those rolling earthquakes. It was just a jolt.”
A moderate earthquake hit a mountainous region of Northern California on Tuesday night. There are no immediate reports or injury or damage.
The magnitude-5.2 temblor struck at 8:03 p.m., centered about 11 miles southeast of the town of Willow Creek in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Willow Creek is about 320 miles north of San Francisco.
The quake originated about 11 miles below the surface on an unmapped fault, said David Oppenheimer, a USGS seismologist based in Menlo Park. Read more

Homes Facing Foreclosure More Than Double In 1Q
“We have a lot of California homes that are in early stages of default that may not be salvageable because either there's no market or financing available, or both.”
The number of U.S. homes heading toward foreclosure more than doubled in the first quarter from a year earlier, as weakening property values and tighter lending left many homeowners powerless to prevent homes from being auctioned to the highest bidder, a research firm said Monday.
Among the hardest hit states were Nevada, Florida and, in particular, California, where Stockton led the nation with a foreclosure rate that was 6.6 times the national average, Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc. said. Read more

State Higher Ed. Leaders Denounce Budget Cuts
California's top higher education officials are warning that inadequate state funding is bleeding the quality from one of the world's most celebrated college and university systems.
The leaders of the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems teamed up Monday to warn that cuts in the governor's proposed budget would have dire consequences for higher education.
Together, the three systems have been told they can expect $1.2 billion less than they say they need for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Read more

Nation Sets Home Vacancy Record; West At 7 Percent
The percentage of vacant homes for sale in the U.S. set a new record high in the first quarter of this year, the government said Monday.
The Census Bureau report shows that shows that 2.9 percent of U.S. homes-excluding rental properties-were vacant and up for sale, compared with 2.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007. It was the highest quarterly number in records going back to 1956.
That works out to 2.28 million properties, up from 2.18 million in the same quarter last year, according to the report. Read more

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly is pushing for approval of a project that would run a high-voltage power line through California's largest state park for 20 miles.
San Diego Gas & Electric's proposal would build industrial-style towers up to 160 feet tall to carry the new line through Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, east of San Diego. The line would carry renewable power from yet-to-be-built plants in the Imperial Desert.

Scratching cat in lap blamed for causing accident
Modesto police are blaming a scratching cat for an accident that toppled a power pole and shut down a street for nearly an hour. A police sergeant said Friday that a woman was driving with a cat in her lap. The animal scratched her, and she drove into the pole.
The woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The cat was taken to a vet to treat an injured eye.
On Wednesday, the Assembly Appropriations Committee approved a bill by Assemblyman Bill Maze that would make it illegal to drive with a pet in your arms or in your lap. Read more

San Diego beaches remain closed after fatal shark attack

Authorities kept watch Saturday over a stretch of Southern California beaches, scanning the waters for a shark they believe killed a triathlete a day earlier.
While authorities advised against going in the ocean from north San Diego to Carlsbad, but said they expect to see people heading into the water to escape the region's summery temperatures.

Survey: Most U.S. States Apparently In Recession
The finances of many states have deteriorated so badly that they appear to be in a recession, regardless of whether that's true for the nation as a whole, a survey of all 50 state fiscal directors concludes.
The situation looks even worse for the fiscal year that begins July 1 in most states.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger predicted Thursday that California would face a budget deficit of more than $10 billion in the fiscal year that starts July 1.
"This is why we have to make all kinds of cuts across the board," he told a group of prosecutors and criminal investigators at a conference near the Capitol.
"I hate making those kinds of cuts, but we have no more money," he added later in comments to reporters. "We have to live within our means. We are out of whack every one of the next few years by $10 (billion) to $12 billion. You cannot tax your way out of that." Read more
