Packers Notes

“I'm definitely confident in myself to do it, and I'm ready for the opportunity”

The Green Bay Packers haven't won at Texas Stadium since 1989, which was four coaches and three starting quarterbacks ago. Brett Favre is 0-8 there, one of nine current stadiums in which he is without a win.

In Sunday's team meeting, coach Mike McCarthy brought up the Packers' history against the Cowboys in Irving. He told players, 'It's really irrelevant, because you were in Little League the last time we played there.'

Favre, who was a junior at Southern Mississippi in 1989, raised his hand. Read more

Stamford baseball mourns loss of Springdale's Caputo

“Their character and staying beyond their years gave a solid base to the league,'”

Stamford, which has long been defined by its youth baseball programs, lost one of its key members Friday when long-time Springdale Little League coach Jim Caputo died. He was 91.

'It's quite a loss to the league,'' said Junie DeLeo, who has coached in the league for 42 years. 'You just watched Jimmy and the way he handled himself, he was always a gentlemen. He won championships and he won games, but he didn't have to scream. All of the other coaches and managers respected Jimmy.'

Caputo began coaching in the Springdale Little League in 1953, and coached in the league until 2003. He coached the sons and sometimes even grandsons of players he had coached previously. Read more

Aggie in a hurry to make impact

“But you can't make them run fast like he can. One thing I wouldn't want to do would be to deter his spirit or ability to track down guys.”

Von Miller remembers his mother sitting him down after little league football games and going over in detail the plays where she felt her son had loafed.

He made a deal with his father back then that he would go hard every play until the whistle blew.

Now a freshman in college, Miller still makes sure he doesn't disappoint his parents.

In his first season at Texas A&M, the defensive end has made the biggest impact among the Aggies' true freshmen with his non-stop motor that's helped him create havoc in the backfield. Read more
