boys will earn United top four spot, Rodgers and Balotelli could cost Liverpool theirs

Manchester United 's victory over a poor Queens Park Rangers side wasn't a giant leap forward but it was certainly a step in the right direction. The result was much needed but it was the performance that was particularly encouraging because United have not performed like that for well over 12 months.

Manchester United should ditch the back three and Louis van Gaal should copy Roy Hodgson

The England chief utilised a 4-3-1-2 formation to get the best from his side in Switzerland - now United's Dutch boss should do the same Less than a week after the England boss was widely criticised for his tactics in a tepid victory over Norway at Wembley, Hodgson flipped the Three Lions script and earned an excellent result against what is a decent Swiss side. Liverpool's precocious starlet Raheem Sterling was handed the keys to the kingdom in a No.10 role, ahead of a midfield featuring the hard-running duo, Fabian Delph and Jordan Henderson, and a deep-lying playmaker in Jack Wilshere.

Jones Injury Could Not Have Come at Worse Time for Himself, United

It often seems that for every strikingly competent performance , the Manchester United defender is equally capable of gifting the opposition a meaningful goalscoring opportunity, such as the one he presented Switzerland's Haris Seferovic on Monday. Even so, the 22-year-old's role at Old Trafford has only become more prominent following the summer departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and it must be said that while United have struggled in their first three matches of the 2014-15 season, Jones has been remarkably effective.

Manchester United may have a world class attack... but their...

Manchester United have a first-class attack, second-class defence: Louis van Gaal has spent big up front... but will they still be punished for their gaps at the back? Manchester United have plenty of options going forward with Rademal Falcao, Angel di Maria, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata If Manchester United's new-look frontline is going to start firing fours and fives, there's a still a danger the boys at the back could concede one more. While we have been salivating over the prospect of Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria joining forces with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, reinforcement at the other end of the park was somewhat neglected.

Are these the 11 players who can ensure United now play 4-3-3?

Manchester United have a new-look squad, so can they now play 4-3-3 rather than the much-maligned 3-5-2? When Louis van Gaal was first appointed as Manchester United manager, talk was of a free-flowing, attack-minded philosophy, of a 4-3-3 formation and an eye for youth. But three games into the Dutchman's tenure at Old Trafford, the club have persevered with the 3-5-2 van Gaal implemented with the Netherlands at the World Cup, while the Galacticos-style spending raises questions as to how many chances the likes of Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson will get this season and beyond.
