Streaks defeat scrappy Scotties

For three weeks, Terry Jones had harped on his football team about the toughness of their opening-night opponent.

The Saratoga Springs head coach was right.

Capitalizing on two timely fumbles Friday night, the Blue Streaks defeated Ballston Spa 27-14 in the Class AA Empire opener for both.

However, the smaller, scrappy Scotties gave them plenty of fight, rallying from a 14-0 deficit to tie the score at halftime.

"I knew all along this was going to be a dogfight," said Jones, himself a former Scottie. "Ballston Spa kids are tough, nasty and resilient. It's tough to prepare for their tenaciousness."

The Streaks snapped a 14-14 tie late in the third quarter, after Ryan Woodcock recovered a Ballston fumble and a penalty placed the ball at the Scotties' 30. On first down, Leejay Pollacchi sprinted to the 1-yard line where he was tripped up. Ford Plowman scored on the next play for a 21-14 lead.

Business leaders attend Upstate NY Economic Summit

Business leaders expressed their desire for an extended federal tax credit for clean energy research and development Friday at the second annual Upstate NY Economic Summit at the Gideon Putnam Spa and resort in Saratoga Springs.

Scott Murphy, the managing director for Advantage Capital Partners, an $88 million venture capital fund in Glens Falls that invests money for life insurance companies, said the investment community will be encouraged by more stability in the federal tax code as it pertains to risky ventures like clean energy start-ups.

“We’ve done probably 17 or 18 deals in the energy space, half of them clean-technology based. If you’re going to make a long-term commitment [to a company] and part of what you’re going to base that on is the availability of tax credits, that’s part of your math, you kind of have to discount it if you’re not sure they’re going to be there,” Murphy said.

Murphy was one of approximately 150 business leaders at the event, which was chaired by U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport. Gillibrand said she began the tradition of hosting the forums during her first year in congress because she wanted to leverage the ability of her office to facilitate discussion on issues.

“The role of government isn’t to solve all problems but it can act to facilitate discussions about how to foster growth in the private sector,” she said.

Tuitions freeze across the USA

Several colleges and universities in Texas, Ohio, Maryland and New York are freezing 2008-2009 tuitions at last year's levels in an effort to make college more affordable for the nation's middle class.

"Tuition is rising faster than the average prices in the economy, but that's been the case for years," says Sandy Baum, a policy analyst at the College Board and an economics professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

From Soup Ta Nuts: Average Americans Bringing It All Home Dummy's Free At Last Edition

Greetings from Pittsburgh, Pennsyltucky. This was my last trip for classes and and it's wonderful to say that at least from that perspective this Student Dummy is free at last! And it feels grrreat! ... This photo was taken from the Winner's Circle at the Track on Travers Day. Retired Senator Joesph Bruno stopped by the first box to visit with Governor David Paterson and his family. A number of photos are around from Travers Day, but perhaps none quite as special as this one. I just happened to catch our Governor being as Average American Saratogian New Yorker as can be. Here he's enjoying a hot dog at Saratoga like a man after my own heart. For informational processing purposes only, my hot dogs are best liked well done, while my burgers are best enjoyed medium rare. It surely was refreshing to catch the Governor and retired NYS Senate Majority Leader acting like a couple of average American guys. ... We visited the 9/11 Flight 93 site in Shanksville. This was my third time there, and every one an emotionally touching one. Thanks to the family there that for last three years has treated me like family. It was hard saying goodbye. ... What do you think now that the two Party conventions are over. At least from a New York perspective, Saratoga County is going to be a watched battle ground. The 20th and 21st Congressional Districts both include part of the County, and Senator Bruno's seat is open. Assemblyman McDonald is leaving his Assembly seat to run for the Senate seat. It's not hard at all to see that the eyes of New York will be focused upon Saratoga. ... SPAC closes this weekend after a glass of wine. That coupled with the NFL on Sundays mean that we are headed for the Fall. That just may be our prettiest time of the year. ... Thanks to All for the support over the last three years. I'll have a lot more time for Us now. ... And Dat's Everything ... From Soup Ta Nuts!

The Local actors guild of saratoga bring us the comedy, Dog sees god

The Local Actors Guild of Saratoga is bringing us a highly anticipated comedy in September, titled, Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.

Ever wondered what happened to Charlie Brown and the gang?

The dark comedy starts out with CB, based on Charlie Brown, writing to his never-heard-from pen pal about Snoopy being put to sleep, due to rabies. Contemplating what happens after we die, CB tries to go to his friends and family about his problems, but unfortunately everyone is too self-involved to really help him. Matt, adapted from Pigpen, is a sex-addicted neat freak; best friend Van, based on Linus, turned to pot after someone burned his security blanket; Tricia and Marci (Peppermint Patty and Marci) are alcoholic mean girls; and CB's sister is searching for her own identity. CB ends up re-establishing contact with his old friend Beethoven (Schroeder), who may or may not be a homosexual. Don't let the old Peanuts comics fool you. With such topics as drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity.

Come see what happens when your beloved peanuts characters question who they are and Charlie Brown asks the question, "Is grief good?".

6th and 13th at 8pm
7th and 14th at 7pm
