Cheese costs put squeeze on Kraft

"We are in a much tougher input-cost environment than we expected"

Kraft Foods Inc. managed Wednesday to beat Wall Street's third-quarter profit and sales expectations, even though it was battered by soaring commodity costs, particularly in its mainstay cheese business. Like many foodmakers, Kraft has been battling surging input prices - from wheat to milk to coffee beans. But cheese has been particularly hard hit as its raw-material prices have risen to 'unprecedented' levels, as one Kraft executive put it Wednesday. The Northfield-based food giant posted third-quarter net income of $596 million, or 38 cents per share, down 20 percent from the same period last year. However, excluding one-time charges, Kraft's third-quarter earnings were 44 cents per share, 2 cents more than Wall Street expected. Read more
