Ford Motor Co. removed some more of the rust from its image Thursday when it posted a narrower third-quarter loss than analysts expected and said it remains on track to produce profits in 2009.

Ford reported a net loss of $380 million, or 19 cents a share, and came relatively close to breaking even on an operating basis, losing $24 million, or 1 cent a share, on its continuing operations. Revenue grew $4 billion, to $41.1 billion.

A year ago Ford lost $5.2 billion, or $2.79 a share, including more than $4 billion in restructuring costs when it accelerated efforts to close plants and cut jobs. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected Ford to lose 47 cents a share this year. Read more
