Missouri climber rescued near Vail

By Daniel J. Chacon, Rocky Mountain News October 16, 2007 A Missouri man missing for two nights in below-freezing temperatures in the Holy Cross Wilderness Area near Vail was found Monday, thanks, in part, to his big feet. Jacob Gately, 23, of Lee's Summit, who suffered only from frostbite and hypothermia, may owe his rescue to his size 13 shoes. Searchers found his tracks late Sunday and kept following the large impressions in the snow. "He wears a size 13 shoe, so it was easy to verify that it was a big foot," Eagle County sheriff's spokeswoman Sara Cross said. "He was walking when they found him. It's amazing that he was in such good shape," she said. Cross said Gately was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center, where he remained hospitalized overnight in stable condition. "Everybody wants to know how Jacob survived and what he was doing while he was out there," she said. "We are all anxious to hear." Gately plans to hold a news conference today at 11 a.m. Gately was reported missing about 7 p.m. Saturday after he failed to show up at the campsite where he was supposed to meet his brother Josh, 24, also of Lee's Summit. The brothers had climbed to the summit of Mount of the Holy Cross but were separated on their way down at around 13,000 feet. The area has received up to a foot of snow since Saturday. Searchers found Jacob Gately's tracks on a different trail than he and his brother had been hiking Saturday. Sunday's search was initially going to be called off at 7 p.m. "But that was about the time they found these tracks, so they kept going" until 1 a.m., Cross said. Eleven volunteers, a rescue dog and a helicopter followed the same tracks Monday and found Gately walking on an access road about noon. "It was a very successful search and a very successful story for Jacob," Cross said. Gately, who was carrying only water and an energy bar, was wearing jeans, tennis shoes, a fleece garment and a rain jacket. "We appreciate everything everyone has done," the Gately family said in a statement provided by the sheriff's office. "We are very thankful and very grateful to have both sons back."
