A police officer happened upon several vehicles stopped in the eastbound lanes of I-435 near Holmes Road about 2:15 a.m. today. At least two of the vehicles had crashed into each other. There also was at least one other vehicle at the scene. Read more

He earned 18 medals, ribbons and awards in Iraq, and was honorably discharged. He wants strangers to know he's a veteran. He says he doesn't drink or use illegal drugs. He calls everyone 'sir' or 'ma'am.'

But something about him isn't right.

Calvin Williams, 33, allegedly first spoke to the 37-year-old female victim when she called a telephone chat line in February. According to police records, Williams told her during that discussion that he was disease-free, and they met up and talked in person that night.

The next day, Williams called her, telling her that he wanted to come over to her house. The victim then picked him up and took him back to her home in Kansas City. That night she had unprotected consensual sex with him, and she continued to do so over the next several days. He never told her that he had HIV, the victim said. Read more

The FBI has opened a 'preliminary inquiry' into Thayer Learning Center, the northwest Missouri boot camp where a 15-year-old boy died in November 2004.

Jeff Lanza, a spokesman for the Kansas City office of the FBI, said Thursday night that the agency would conduct a limited investigation to determine two things: whether a crime occurred in connection with the death of Roberto Reyes and, if so, whether that crime violated federal law.

After the preliminary inquiry, which could take three months or more, the FBI will determine whether to open a full investigation. Read more

The council will vote Thursday on repealing the plan. But based on the advice of legal council, seven council members said they would agree to put a citizen-led effort to repeal the plan on the February ballot in the event the plan's architect, Clay Chastain, goes to court seeking to overturn the repeal.

If Chastain does not go to court and the repeal takes effect later this month, then the February election would not be held. Read more
